Ted Nguimbi, better known by his kombo (initiatic Bwiti name) "Maviango", is a young Gabonese man (from the Punu ethic group) who is amazing in many ways. His instrument the mugongo is likely the oldest stringed instrument in the world and is born of the hunting bow. The flat string is tapped with what used to be an arrow and the other hand, holding a stick, goes between an open string and a higher register by touching the stick to the string ....much like a guitar fret. The mouth creates the resonating chamber to amplify the resonance of the string as it is tapped. The mouth and two hands work in unison to create an amazing number of textural tones and qualities that have to be heard to be believed. It is understandable that this instrument is considered by the original pygmy tribes such as the Babongo to be key in providing the rhythms and energy needed for healing, and is a direct connection to birds especially as well as animals and plants of the forest.

Maviango is a master of the Mugongo meaning that he is able to use the traditional rhythms and accuracy of tone and texture through his instrument to heal the mind, body and spirit. The Mugongo is extremely difficult...much more so than it first might seem...but maviango makes it look easy.

As humble and gentle as he is powerful and solid maviango teaches us through his magic sounds vibrations to return back to nature and listen and feel the sounds around us as a way to come home to ourselves and so to humanity.

Money from all purchases will go directly back to Maviango helping him and his family to continue learning and teaching and conserving his traditional Bwiti roots.

"Maviango" is best translated as "the unpredictable" or "the movement of the antelope"...as you will hear his gifted agility and dexterity are as unpredictable and beautiful as the rain from Heaven.

The first main track on this album was recorded in 2010. Maviango was about fifteen. The four extra tracks were recorded in 2018. Both recordings were taken at the NGO Ebando, (www.ebando.org) run by Tatayo in Libreville, Gabon ...Maviango's main home and place of work for most of his life. We look forward to this being the first of several collections of recordings.

UPDATE:
On the 13th of september 2018, this album made history being played on BBC Radio 3 at 23:00 GMT. Maviango made history most likely being the first Mugongo player to be played on international Radio!

Ted Nguimbi, plus connu par son kombo (nom initiatique bwitiste) "Maviango", est un jeune homme gabonais (de l'ethnie Punu) incroyable à bien des égards. Son instrument, le mugongo, est probablement l'instrument à cordes le plus ancien du monde et est né de l'arc de chasse. La corde plate faite d'une liane est tapotée avec ce qui était une flèche et l’autre main, tenant un court bâton, effectue des pressions sur la corde un peu comme une frette de guitare. La bouche fait office de caisse de résonance pour amplifier le son de la liane lorsqu'elle est tapotée. La bouche, le souffle et les deux mains travaillent à l'unisson pour créer un nombre incroyable de tonalités et de vibrations sonores. Le Mugongo est considéré par les tribus pygmées telles que les Babongo comme un élément clé dans la production de rythmes et d'énergie nécessaires à la guérison, et permet d'entrer en communication directe avec la faune, en particulier les oiseaux, comme avec la flore avoisinante.

Maviango est un maître du Mugongo, ce qui signifie qu'il est capable d'utiliser les rythmes traditionnels et le large éventails de sons/vibrations pour soigner le corps et l'esprit. Le Mugongo est extrêmement difficile… beaucoup plus que cela peut apparaître au premier abord… mais Maviango semble rendre cela facile.

Aussi humble et doux qu'il est puissant et solide, Maviango nous apprend à travers ses vibrations magiques à revenir à la nature, à écouter et à ressentir les sons qui nous entourent pour nous reconnecter avec nos racines communes à l'humanité toute entière.
L'intégralité des revenus générés par la vente de cette musique sera directement reversé à Maviango pour l'aider, lui et sa famille, à continuer à apprendre et à transmettre les valeurs traditionnelles bwitistes.

Maviango se traduit mieux par "l'imprévisible" ou "le mouvement de l'antilope" ... comme vous l'entendrez, son agilité et sa dextérité sont aussi imprévisibles et belles que la pluie du ciel.

Le premier morceau principal de cet album a été enregistré en 2010. Maviango avait une quinzaine d’années. Les quatre titres supplémentaires ont été enregistrés en 2018. Les deux enregistrements ont été réalisés à l'ONG Ebando (www.ebando.org), dirigée par Tatayo à Libreville, au Gabon. Le domicile principal et le lieu de travail de Maviango. Nous espérons que ce sera la première de plusieurs collections d'enregistrements.
